Canada loses to El Salvador in opening game of CONCACAF futsal qualifier

GUATEMALA CITY - Canada lost 4-1 to El Salvador on Thursday in the opening leg of a two-game playoff to get into the CONCACF Futsal Championship.
Futsal is a five-a-side indoor version of the soccer, played over two 20-minute periods. It is believed to date back to Uruguay in 1930.
Alex Elliot scored the lone Canadian goal. The second leg is set for Friday.
"In all honesty we just couldn't execute today," said Canadian coach Sipho Sibiya, who has represented Canada in both futsal and beach soccer.
"We missed a few chances that came back to haunt us. And then they scored — we let some soft ones in. And we were kind of playing catchup after that. ... They finished on their chances and we didn't. Simple as that."
The winner of the total goal playoff series will join host Guatemala, Panama and the U.S. in Group A at the regional qualifier, which runs July 2-8 in Guatemala City. Group B consists of Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica and St. Kitts.
CONCACAF covers North and Central American and the Caribbean.
The four semifinalists will advance to the FIFA Futsal World Cup in November in Thailand.
"It's a fast game," said Sibiya. "You've got to think quick on your feet, think quick with your mind. It's technical. We're trying to teach the boys that in a span of days."
The Canadian team had little time together prior to taking on El Salvador, other than a camp lasting four to five days in Costa Rica. The Canadian side lost a pair of friendlies to Costa Rica: 2-1 and 4-0.
"All these teams in CONCACAF have basically been together for years," said Sibiya. "So it's a crash course for us, but the boys have responded well to what we've taught them and we'll see what happens (Friday)."
Canada took part in the inaugural Futsal World Cup in the Netherlands in 1989, when CONCACAF teams received invitations to compete in the indoor world championship.
The Canadians went 1-2 that year, exited after the first round and have never been back since. Canada has not been involved in regional qualifying since 2004.
Sibiya played outdoor soccer for the Vancouver 86ers, Montreal Impact and Edmonton Aviators and had a lengthy career playing indoors. He was an assistant coach with the Vancouver Whitecaps women's team last year.

(Left-to-right. Technical Director Toronto Boca Juniors Academy, Roy Blanche; Int'l Coordinator of Boca's Academy, Oscar Aquino, Pres. Toronto Boca Juniors Academy, Bobby Nikmard)

The Toronto Boca Juniors Soccer School aims to provide elite soccer training to youth and also incorporate elements of social and academic support.

Students will be taught to increase psychomotor functions through the game and the advanced training techniques, using instruments specifically developed for this aim and developed over Boca's 103 years existence.

We look to have our students accept and know the rules of the game, to develop and use strategies and above all make children become aware of the fact that the greatest success is not winning a match or tournament but showing the greatest physical, technical and mainly human potential.

The Toronto Boca Juniors Soccer School also has a great emphasis on students maintaing strong academic standards. From this standpoint, students will be provided with academic support through different professional organizations in the community.

Even though these are football schools, they are “schools” that educate and transmit values to people. Respect toward the referee, the opponents and mainly to their own mates is one of the prime objectives in our teaching. By the end of the course, students will not only have had an opportunity to pursue trials with professional clubs but they will also be equiped to be strong members of their communities.

Canada is in its early preparations for the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Qualifiers, with dates and location for the confederation qualification dates yet to be announced. Canada has hopes of winning a spot at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012, which runs 2-18 November.
"It was good for us to take a look at the players from all across the country," said coach Sibiya, who made several scouting trips in different regions before calling in 22 players to the national camp in Richmond.
As part of the weekend itinerary, Canada held three training sessions plus an East v West intra-squad exhibition match.
Thailand 2012 will be the seventh edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup, now held every four years. Canada participated in the first edition back in January 1989. Sunday 8 January was in fact the 23-year anniversary of Canada's 6:2 win over Japan in that inaugural FIFA Futsal World Cup Netherlands 1989.

National Futsal coach Sipho Sibiya has selected 22 players for a national futsal camp this coming weekend, 6-8 January 2012. The camp will feature players from across the country as Canada begins its early preparations for the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship later this year. The CONCACAF championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012.
Canada's three-day national futsal camp will take place in Richmond, BC. Of the 22 players, 12 of them have participated in a Canadian national camp before, be it in the Futsal, Beach Soccer or national youth program. Of note, Gordon Chin is a one-time FIFA U-20 World Cup player (UAE 2003) while Kyriakos Selaidopoulos is a one-time FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup player (Rio 2006).
Chin and Selaidopoulos are also the two Canadian players who participated in Canada's last CONCACAF Futsal Qualifying matches in 2004. Canada faced Panama in a two-match series that year, but did not advance to the final CONCACAF round. Canada previously participated in the inaugural FIFA Futsal World Cup Netherlands 1989.
Canada's roster also features 10 first-time players in the Canadian national program.
